A former student and athlete with Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA), Megan Schofill, is continuing to make her name known around the nation with her career in women’s golf.
Schofill, who now attends Auburn University, in Alabama, has been playing the game of golf for many years. She discovered a love for the game while attending the Jefferson County summer camps hosted by ACA Golf Coach David Jackson.
According to Schofill, the game came naturally to her, but it also required a lot of work and practice for her to perfect.
Since her start at summer camp, Schofill has gone on to claim multiple athletic honors.
While still a student at ACA, Schofill played in the United States Golf Association's Women's Amateur Championship, which is the leading annual golf tournament in the country for amateur golfers.
She was also named an American Junior Golfing Association (AJGA) Rolex first-team All-American and won 13 titles in her golfing career, including four AJGA victories.
During her 2019-2020 Fall Season with Auburn University, Schofill finished as a runner-up at the Magnolia Invitational Amateur Golf tournament in October of 2019 and then finished T-10 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in April of 2019.
Throughout 2019, Schofill also advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and won both the Georgia Women's Match Play Championship and Rome Junior Classic, while also finishing T-4 at the ANA Junior Inspiration.
At the beginning of 2020, Schofill was invited to play at the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) tournament, which is a chance for the top female golfers in the world to compete against one another.
Schofill will be getting a chance to make her name known internationally later this year, in December. For the first time in her career, Schofill will represent the United States, as she has been invited to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup, where she will represent her country on the USA Team.
“This will be the first event I will ever compete in where I represent my country and that is such an unbelievable honor,” said Schofill. “When I got the phone call a few weeks ago, I was in shock.”
Schofill will be joined on the USA team by 23 other young athletes from around the nation, and they will compete against the International Team, composed of athletes representing the other countries of the world.
“I have truly never been more excited to go and play in a golf tournament,” said Schofill. “It’s such an awesome feeling knowing that I got picked to be a part of something bigger than myself.”
Megan Schofill, who is the daughter of Jefferson County’s Billy and Paulette Schofill, also wished the best for her home county amidst the current COVID-19 crisis. “I hope that everyone in Monticello is staying safe during all these crazy times.”
This year's Arnold Palmer Cup is scheduled to take place this December at the Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.
While the game plans to move forward, that could change based on the on-going situation with COVID-19.
