Drizzly weather did not deter the Jefferson Senior Citizens Center (JSCC) from holding a successful drive-through chicken lunch fundraiser on Friday, July 14.
A tent went up in the parking lot to shelter the large deep fryer from the raindrops. By 11:30 a.m., cars with their windshield wipers flapping had lined up from the center's back door all the way around the building and into North Jefferson Street. With umbrellas in one hand and completed lunch orders in the other, JSCC Board members and volunteers from the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office and Property Appraiser's Office ferried completed lunch orders from the center's bustling kitchen to each patron's car. As vehicles inched their way through the pick-up line, JSCC Kitchen Manager Dolleen Williams coordinated the preparation of a steady flow of more than 100 delicious fried chicken meals.
For the most part, patrons had obtained tickets in advance for the meal of chicken wings, cole slaw, baked beans, roll and a drink. Members of the JSCC Board of Directors and other supporters of the center had promoted the fundraiser, offering tickets for a $10 donation. The fundraiser drew spontaneous patrons as well, and the proceeds are still being counted, with additional donations still coming in after the event.
JSCC Executive Director Mazie Woodson-Glenn sends out a big, heartfelt thanks to all who gave their time, talents and donations to make this fundraiser a success. Glenn, who started in her role at JSCC earlier this year, appreciates what the funds will mean for expanding services at the center, reaching out for new clients and continuing the home health program. She notes that donations to the center in any amount are helpful and can be given at any time, not just during special fundraising events.
Still, Glenn is hopeful that the JSCC Board will organize many other fundraisers like the recent chicken wing meal deal, perhaps as often as once a month.
The JSCC Board of Directors includes Chair Gloria A. Cox, Vice Chair Sandra Saunders, Secretary Martha Creel, Assistant Secretary Geraldine Wildgoos, Treasurer Nan Baughman, Member Martha Lamar, Member Christine Newell, Emeritus Member Miner Brookins and Emeritus Member George Pittman. Willie Ann Dickey, a member of the Area Agency on Aging Board of Directors, also regularly meets with the JSCC Board.
