Voters are reminded that the primary election is on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and that this Friday and Saturday – Aug. 14 and 15, respectively – are the last days to early vote.
Remember also that the election office has moved. Its new location is 1175 W. Washington St.
Three local offices appear on the primary ballot. They are the Superintendent of Schools; County Commission, District 3; and School Board, District 4.
Running for the School Superintendent on the Republican ticket are Al Cooksey and Eydie Tricquet. And running on the Democratic ticket are Glover Jones and LaClarence Mays.
The winners in these two respective contests then go against No Party Affiliation (NPA) incumbent Marianne Arbulu in the general election in November.
In the County Commission, District 3 race, the two Democratic candidates vying for their party nomination are C.P. Miller and Ben Ransom. The winner here then goes against Republican incumbent J. T. Surles in the general election.
And in the nonpartisan School Board, District 4 race, the contest is between incumbent Bill Brumfield and challenger Karen Purser. Because this is a nonpartisan race, the primary will decide the race.
Other races that appear on the ballot, depending on a voter’s precinct, are: Congressional District 5, State Senate District 3, and Public Defender. Republican candidates running for their party’s nomination in the Congressional District 5 race are Gary Adler and Roger Wagoner. And on the Democratic side, the candidates vying for their party’s nomination are incumbent Al Lawson and challengers Albert Chester and LaShonda Holloway. The winners in these two respective contests go against each other in November.
The Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination in the State Senate District 3 race are Marva Harris Preston and Benjamin John Horbowy. The Republican winner in this contest then goes against Democratic House Representative Loranne Ausley, who faces no primary competition for the Senate seat.
Longtime Democratic Senator Bill Montford currently holds the Senate District 3 seat. Montford is being term-limited out.
For the Office of Public Defender, the candidates are Andy Thomas and Jessica Yeary, both Democrats. This is a universal contest, meaning that all voters can participate, regardless of party affiliation.
Two Circuit Judgeships appear on the ballot. For the Second Judicial Circuit, Group 4 seat, the candidates are Tiffany Baker, Nina Moody, Amanda P. Wall and Pete Williams.
And for the Second Judicial Circuit, Group 16 seat, the candidates are Kevin Alvarez and Angela Dempsey.
The polls will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
