For most of us growing up in rural communities, the steady, whirring hum of cicadas is one of the most nostalgic indicators of an upcoming summer. Unlike other spring and summer insects, like lovebugs, which can be a seasonal nuisance, and biting flies like deerflies, no-see-ums and the infamous mosquito, cicadas cause very little hassle for most Floridians. While their call is easily recognizable, the truth is, many Florida residents have never seen a live cicada but are most familiar with the exoskeletons they shed, which can be found on vertical structures like fences, trees and houses.
This year marks a big year in the cicada world, as two differ
