With the primary for the 2020 election set for mid-August, one can only hope that by then the coronavirus pandemic will be under control, if not history.
That said, it warrants checking the individuals who are seeking the 11 local offices that are up for election, as the number of candidates has increased.
A look at the Jefferson County Supervisor of Elections' website shows that 22 individuals have now pre-qualified for public office.
Although not necessarily a precursor to qualification – when candidates formally commit to run by paying a fee or submitting a petition signed by a designated percentage of voters – pre-qualification allows candidates to set up campaign accounts, name campaign managers and begin soliciting donations.
Qualification, incidentally, is set for noon Monday to noon Friday, June 8-12, per the Supervisor of Elections' website.
Of the 11 local offices currently up for election, four are uncontested. The four are the offices of Sheriff, Property Appraiser, County Commission District 5 and School Board District 1.
The seven offices that are contested are Supervisor of Elections, Superintendent of Schools, Clerk of Court and Comptroller, Tax Collector, County Commission Districts 1 and 3 and School Board District 4.
As of Tuesday, May 12, the county had 9,830 registered voters. Of these, 5,127 were Democrat, 3,571 were Republican and 1,132 were identified as other.
