A Monticello resident was arrested in Madison County after 41 grams of marijuana and a firearm were seized from her possession.
Laterria Crumity, a convicted felon and Monticello resident, was found to be in possession of the drugs and firearm on Thursday, June 11, at approximately 9:25 p.m., during a routine traffic stop in Madison, Fla. An additional three grams were seized from the driver of the vehicle, Christopher Smith, also of Monticello.
According to Madison Police Department, Patrol Officer Fred Korey was driving on North Duval Avenue when he observed a four-door sedan driving without headlights on. When the vehicle was pulled over, Ptl. Korey made contact with the male driver of the vehicle, who was identified as 29-year-old Christopher Smith.
Smith informed the officer that he did not possess a driver’s license and at that time Smith was asked to exit the vehicle. When Smith opened the door to exit the vehicle, Ptl. Korey detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Madison's Cpl. Sanders soon arrived on scene and made contact with the 27-year-old female passenger, Laterria Crumity, also of Monticello.
Upon searching the vehicle, a clear plastic bag with a small amount of marijuana, a cup holder ashtray with a half-smoked blunt, a Gucci bag containing marijuana, a semi-automatic handgun with seven rounds of ammunition in the magazine and a digital scale commonly used for weighing narcotics were discovered. A metal rolling tray designed to be used when smoking marijuana and a plastic scraper, both covered in marijuana residue, were also discovered in the vehicle.
After both defendants denied ownership of the firearm found in the vehicle, Crumity, the passenger, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, due to the fact that the firearm was located in close proximity to Crumity and she was the sole owner of the vehicle.
When she was told that she was under arrest for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Crumity stated, “You might as well charge me with this weed, too.” She then proceeded to remove a clear ziplock bag containing a large amount of marijuana from the front of her pants.
Crumity was transported to the jail and while being searched for contraband, she was found to be in possession of $1,696, which was seized for evidence.
The marijuana seized from Smith weighed three grams, while the marijuana seized from Crumity weighed 41 grams. While Smith was not transported to the Madison County Jail, he was charged with no valid driver’s license, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and a written warning for driving without headlights. Smith was issued a notice to appear in court on Monday, July 20.
In addition to being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Crumity was also charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell due to having more than a recreational amount of marijuana, a large amount of cash found in her possession and being in possession of tools commonly used in the selling of narcotics.
