A stroll through the streets of the past

We drive, walk and bike many of the same paths people have been traversing for centuries. Even before Monticello became a community in 1820s in territorial Florida, an Apalachee settlement existed around the area of downtown Monticello. It was likely abandoned in 1704, then was later inhabited again by Seminoles, and abandoned once more by 1826. Our town's history, and the history of the paths we travel within it, stretch back farther than many realize.Â
