Afternoon tea has been a tradition for centuries. The idea of taking a little time to enjoy a light snack with a refreshing cup of tea is no new invention, of course, but the idea of having a dedicated specific time for tea was only invented around 1840 in England. Evening meals were prolonged later and later with industrialization's influence on society, so a little snack was desirable to keep people going until dinnertime. As a result, afternoon tea became a very popular tradition.
