American Legion Otto M. Walker Post 49 recently announced that Jonathan Steen will represent its membership in session at the Florida American Legion Boys State Convention, which be taking place on June 21-27, at Florida State University this year.
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school juniors in the United States.
It is a participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state governments.
At Boys State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. Their training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments.
The sessions are operated by students elected to various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits from elected state representatives.
“You could not select a more confident, capable, or deserving student to receive this opportunity than Jonathan Steen,” remarks Major Christopher McDaniel, Senior Army Instructor for the JROTC program at Jefferson Somerset.
Steen is a student at Jefferson Somerset. He is involved with the JROTC and is a member of the school's Robotics Club.
He plans to continue his education at an area trade school then go on to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, an American mixed martial arts promotion company based in Las Vegas, Nev., which is owned and operated by parent company William Morris Endeavor. All the while, Steen plans to build his own technology business.
“If I were governor for just one day, I would fix the environmental issues dealing with Florida," says Steen.
