During the recent American Legion Riders Unity Ride, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts passed through Jefferson County and made a stop in Madison on Wednesday, April 19, on their way from Pensacola, Fla., to Seminole, Fla. The Unity Ride is a statewide program that raises money for Project Vet Relief, an organization dedicated to help prevent veteran suicide. The ride from Pensacola to Seminole was one of three routes taken by the American Legion Riders to raise money and awareness for Project Vet Relief.
According to Jason Skobel, Western Florida Chairman for the American Legion Riders, the three origins for the Unity Ride were Pensacola, Jacksonville and Kissimmee, with all three routes culminating in Seminole, Fla. The Pensacola route took riders through Jefferson County and on to Madison, where they stopped briefly at Four Freedoms Park before heading up to American Legion Post 224, in Cherry Lake, to have lunch. Later in the day, the riders were heading through Live Oak before stopping in Lake City, Fla. for the night. The riders were meeting other riders from across the state in Seminole, on Friday, April 21. The Pensacola route covered a total of 793 miles.
“There are an estimated 22 veteran suicides every day,” said Skobel. “Many of these are due to [post traumatic stress disorder] PTSD. This ride is raising money for Project Vet Relief, to help stop that.”
