Dear Editor:
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to be involved with a rescued mastiff dog that was noticed as a stray by Sheriff McNeill on Highway 27 in Jefferson County. He contacted Animal Control and dispatch sent Officer Robbie Slack on the mission. Robbie and Sheriff McNeill tracked the dog through the woods, over fences and finally were able to catch and confine this big dog. Florida Mastiff Rescue in Stewart, Florida networked with volunteers to determine what to do with him. I have been involved in dog rescue since living in Monticello for 29 years on occasion and was contacted to house this dog until he could be transported to a foster home in Clearwater, Florida.
This mastiff is one lucky dog! I cannot say enough about Officer Robbie Slack of Jefferson County Animal Control for putting his heart and soul into this animal and having the expertise to capture him. In discussing the situation with Florida Mastiff Rescue representative, Pam Boswell, she praised Robbie's help with this dog to the utmost. Pam told me, "We have never had an animal control organization do more than Jefferson County's Robbie Slack." Robbie transported the big dog to Animal Medical Clinic for evaluation and vaccinations and then to my kennel.
In addition, kudos to Sheriff McNeill for physically being an integral part of helping Robbie in his efforts. Most especially, he is to be credited with DOING SOMETHING from the very beginning of noticing he dog in distress on a very hot day. Robbie was very appreciative of his help and staying until the dog was safely in the dog box on his truck.
Robbie affectionately named the big boy "Beast." When we put him in the air conditioned kennel, he immediately took a big sigh and plopped down for a nap. I will make sure Beast has everything he needs until Florida Mastiff Rescue steps in to transport him to his new home.
Big thanks to Sheriff McNeill and Robbie Slack!
