Yet another hurricane-season storm is projected to impact north Florida, with the Big Bend area under a tropical storm warning as of Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
According to the NHC forecast track, the center of Nicole would move across central Florida Thursday morning, possibly emerge over the far northeastern Gulf of Mexico midday Thursday, and sweep across the Florida Panhandle and into Georgia on Thursday night and early Friday.
The storm was forecast to weaken as moved overland and likely become a tropical depression over Georgia.
Regardless of the storm’s trajectory, rainy and windy conditions were forecast for the region, including Jefferson County, through Friday.
The storm also is reported to have a big-wind field, meaning that its tropical storm winds extend outward up to 450 miles from the center, especially to the north.
Earlier in the week, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for counties potentially in the storm’s path.
“While this storm does not, at this time, appear that it will become much stronger, I urge all Floridians to be prepared and to listen to announcements from their local emergency management officials,” DeSantis said on Monday.
Nicole is the 14th named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.
