North Florida College is now taking applications for the Fred Biletnikoff Scholarship (FBS). The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious Biletnikoff Award are seeking college and vocational school scholarship applications from qualifying high school seniors in the North Florida counties of Gulf, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee and Wakulla. The Foundation will award a substantial amount in benefits for 2022 graduating seniors for college, university and vocational school scholarships. The scholarships may be used at any university, college or vocational school in the United States.
The foundation will review any applications that are postmarked on or before Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022. TQC urges applicants to submit their applications any time beginning Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021. As an applicant, you must have your academic transcripts through December of 2021 submitted as soon as possible. Transcripts should be sent from your school or delivered in person in a sealed envelope. Applications are accepted from high school seniors attending public, private, charter or virtual high schools. The Foundation normally presents 15 scholarships to applicant winners from the surrounding counties each year. Scholarship grants range from $7,500 to $14,000 per student.
The award is based on an All-American receiver from Florida State University, Fred Biletnikoff. After playing for Florida State, Biletnikoff went to the National Football League (NFL) and played for the Oakland Raiders and became an All-Pro receiver. During his 14 year career, he caught 589 passes for a record-setting 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns. He played for the Raiders from 1965 through 1978. He was also awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for Super Bowl XI. The TQC believes that to follow after a great and hard-working player as such, the qualifications for this award; must have overcome significant mental, physical, emotional or environmental barriers to achieve at the highest academic and extracurricular levels. The extracurricular activities do not require playing a sport, although sport participation qualifies for the scholarship.
The correlation between Biletnikoff Award winners and becoming a star in the National Football League is nearly uniformly consistent. The previous Biletnikoff Award winners include: Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper, the late Terry Glenn and Larry Fitzgerald.
The 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented the Biletnikoff Award trophy by TQC Foundation Chairman Roger Champion, keynoter and college Hall-of-Fame and two-time Heisman Trophy winner, Archie Griffin and college and pro football Hall-of-Fame, Fred Biletnikoff at the Biletnikoff Award Banquet & Celebration at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday, March 5, 2022.
