There is a new group of athletes at Jefferson Somerset, and they are prepared to show off what they can do at an upcoming community race-off.
For the first time in community history, the Jefferson Somerset elementary grade athletes now have a track and field team of their own. While the school already had a team for high school and middle school athletes, this new team – which calls itself the SomerJets – gives student athletes in the elementary school grades an opportunity to race and run.
The athletes on this team range in ages from kindergarten through fifth grade and will be coached by Walter Ghee, Jr.
Carlisssa Shuler and Walter Ghee III will serve as the team's trainers, and Chandra Tucker is the team's coordinator.
In order to introduce this new team to the Jefferson County community, the SomerJets will be hosting a community race-off on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Starting at 11 a.m. and running throughout the day until 2 p.m., the team will be gathered at the Harry Jacob Field (located in the Tiger Sports Complex). They are inviting all members of the community to attend and participate in a 40-yard dash or a 100m relay race.
The only stipulations to enter is a $2 admission fee per person and all participants must sign a waiver upon entry to the track.
All admission fees will go towards funding future projects, uniforms and events with the Jefferson County SomerJets Track and Field Team.
Although the SomerJets is an elementary team, some of their future goals are to join the AAU Track and Field Organization, the USA Track and Field Organization and to compete in the Junior and National Championships.
Support this group of athletic youngsters and come out for an afternoon of racing fun!
