On Friday, October 30, Aucilla Christian Academy announced the hiring of Larry Powell as its varsity boys' basketball coach for the 2020-21 season.
Coach Powell is from Tallahassee and played collegiately at North Florida Community College in Madison and King University, a Christian University, in Bristol, Tenn.
Coach Powell previously coached for the Warriors from 1996 to 1999. He led the varsity boys to two regional playoff appearances including the school’s first ever district championship in 1999.
Principal Richard Finlayson introduced the new coach to the boys' basketball players at a meeting where Powell shared his vision for the program. Powell stressed the importance of sound fundamentals and hard work. He shared the importance of I Corinthians 9:24, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” He stressed that in basketball and life one should strive to win, but the important lesson was to make sure that the preparation and training was done wholeheartedly in a way that leads to a winning approach and attitude.
Principal Finlayson stated, “Coach Larry Powell is a tremendous addition to our ministry team. He will make an extremely strong impact on our young men both athletically and spiritually. We are very blessed that he is joining our staff.”
Boys' basketball practice began on Nov. 2 and games begin in early December.
