Christ Episcopal Church in Monticello is featured in a just-released, 500-page book full of stories and photographs of the oldest surviving wood-frame Episcopal churches in Florida.
Spires in the Sun: The Carpenter Gothic Episcopal Churches of Florida, written by Jonathan Rich with photography by Phil Eschbach, celebrates these churches that were built in the 1800s, when Florida was still the nation's southeastern frontier. Their Carpenter Gothic architecture presents in wood the features that originally were built in stone, an innovation made possible by skilled woodworkers using the abundance of timber in 19th-century Florida.
