On Saturday, Aug. 13, United Force of Jefferson County will be hosting its 2nd Annual Back-to-School Refill Your Backpacks Community Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jefferson County Recreation Park on Mamie Scott Drive. Here's what's planned:
School Supplies
Jefferson County Community Friends Vice President Jamia Bradley has organized the collection of school supplies for all grade levels from preschool through twelfth grade. Items being offered may include the following: preschool rest mats, crayons, glue sticks, glue, pencils, pocket folders, pencil pouches, colored pencils, composition notebooks, scissors, ring binders, yellow highlighters, rulers, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, protractors, markers, pens, pencil sharpener, dry-erase markers, baby wipes, Lysol spray, Clorox wipes, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, play dough, Ziploc bags and flash drives.
Food and Groceries
United Force is providing free lunch, and Anything Can Help Inc., founded by Korls Orius, has organized a farm share grocery giveaway as well.
Vaccines
The University of Florida Health will be administering Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines, boosters, and health screenings in partnership with Disability Rights Florida (DRF). DRF is ensuring that the vaccine site will be accessible to all and will have a sign language interpreter present as well. To soothe young recipients of vaccine shots, DRF gives them a Buzzy Bee armband toy that vibrates and holds an ice pack on the shot area.
Community Information
In addition, community organizations will be on hand to provide information about resource services in health and wellness, finances and legal services.
United Force of Jefferson County welcomes families with school-age children to come on out to the Rec Park on Aug. 13 for this special opportunity.
