The Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA) basketball program recently celebrated the holiday with an event that was started long ago in a hockey arena. The Teddy Bear Toss is a popular Christmas-themed event that was started in 1993 at the Kamloops Blazers hockey game in British Columbia. Today, many sports teams have picked up the tradition and continue to celebrate the idea throughout the years. Basically, fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to toss for donations that will be delivered to hospitals and charitable organizations for children.
Last Friday night, Dec. 16, the ACA Warriors held their very own Teddy Bear Toss. An excited crowd of Warrior fans sat in the stands holding tight to Teddy bears and other stuffed toy animals of their choice, anxious to toss them onto the court as soon as the first three-point shot was made during the varsity Lady Warriors basketball game.
Samantha Drawdy was the Lady Warrior who sank that three-pointer, and in a flash, teddy bears and stuffed animals were everywhere! A joyful moment that lasted only a few seconds successfully filled an entire gym full of people with happiness and laughter. After the Teddy bears and stuffed animals were collected from the court, it was time for more basketball.
The Varsity Lady Warriors rocked the court with a bountiful win of 46-24 over the Countryside Christian Minutemen. They will be traveling for an away game on Jan. 3, 2023, to face off against the Taylor County Bulldogs in hopes of bringing home win number 10 for the season.
When the boys' Varsity Warriors faced off against Countryside, they played a great game with determined competitiveness and were just seconds away from a win when Countryside’s Brandon Whitesides (#5) stole it away with two successful free throws. The final score was 46-44.
On Dec. 17, the Varsity Warriors played two games, winning one against the Cornerstone Academy Cougars from Gainesville 41-31 and losing the other 22-55 to the Community Leadership Academy Lions. The Warriors will be traveling to Ocala on Jan. 5, 2023, to play their first game of the new year against the Meadowbrook Academy Mustangs.
