After the Presidential Preference Primary polls closed on Tuesday, March 17 and as the Jefferson County Elections Office counted ballots and votes, it quickly became clear which two candidates had gathered the most support from Jefferson County voters.
Republican voters in Jefferson County voted almost unanimously for current Commander in Chief Donald Trump.
In Jefferson County, Trump received 887 votes – or 96.73 percent of the overall vote. That number is only slightly higher than the state-wide percentage, as Trump gathered a total of 1,162,221 votes in Florida. That number breaks down to 93.79 percent of the overall Florida Republican vote.
In contest against Trump were Bill Weld, who came in second place with 39,275 votes (3.17 percent), as well as Joe Walsh with 25,449 votes (2.05 percent) and Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente with 12,165 votes (0.98 percent).
Despite the four candidates listed on the ballot, only Trump, Weld and Da La Fuente remained in the running, as Walsh had dropped out of the presidential race in February.
While the Republican Party was only divided between four candidates, the Democrat ballot contained a significantly higher list of names, although only three remained as candidates for election.
The Democratic vote was drawn between its three remaining candidates, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and Tulsi Gabbard.
It was a no-contest for Biden to win over Jefferson County and Florida as a whole.
Locally, Biden scored a total of 1,551 votes, totaling up to 76.03 percent of the overall vote; across the state, Biden completed the Florida Election with 1,075,807 votes, equally 61.95 percent.
The other two remaining candidates scored much lower.
Gabbard, the only woman left running the presidential race, obtained 12 votes in Jefferson County (0.59 percent) and Sanders scored 276 votes (13.53 percent).
The other candidates who had dropped out of the race, but were supported by Jefferson County voters, were:
Michael Bennett – 13 votes.
Michael Bloomberg – 98 votes.
Cory Booker – 6 votes.
Pete Buttigieg – 13 votes.
Julian Castro – 2 votes.
John Delaney – 7 votes.
Amy Klobuchar – 18 votes.
Joe Sestak – 2 votes.
Tom Steyer – 8 votes.
Elizabeth Warren – 21 votes.
Marianne Williamson – 4 votes.
Andrew Yang – 9 votes.
Former candidate Deval Patrick was the only name on the ballot to not receive any votes in Jefferson County.
The next state to hold their Presidential Preference Primary will be the State of Georgia, whose voters will finalize their votes for a Tuesday, March 24 Election Day.
The next election in Jefferson County will be in August of this year, which is where voters will vote for local and statewide political seats.
