Big Bend Hospice (BBH), whose service area includes Jefferson County, would like some handmade fidget mats for use in comforting patients living with dementia.

Any quilters and sewing enthusiasts in the area can help – whether part of a quilting guild, sewing circle, church group or someone who enjoys sewing projects on their own. Recently, members of Quilters Unlimited gathered at the BBH field office in Monticello to work together making fidget mats.
Fidget mats are small, quilted mats made with a variety of textures, colors and interactive elements. They help patients in a number of ways:
• keeping hands gently engaged
• reducing restlessness and anxiety
• providing comfort and sensory stimulation
• promoting a sense of calm in a safe, soothing way
To learn more about guidelines, sizes and how to donate completed mats, contact BBH Volunteer Coordinator Andrea Zinker at azinker@bigbendhospice.org or 850-878-5310.
