Two 17-year-old Jefferson Somerset students have been arrested in relation to last week’s bomb threats at the school.
On Tuesday morning, November 13, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies responded to a bomb threat at the K-12 school after a caller announced that three bombs had been planted at the school.
According to the caller, the bombs would go off at 10 a.m.
After an evacuation of the students at Jefferson Somerset, JCSO deputies searched the school buildings and grounds and found no trace of any explosives.
JCSO remained on scene until after the time that the caller had advised that the three bombs would go off, and once the school was deemed safe, students and staff were returned to Jefferson Somerset to resume the day.
A second bomb threat came on Thursday, November 15 when another call claimed that the threat was not over and that there was another bomb in the school.
According to a report issued by the JCSO, this second caller sounded different from the first caller and threat.
JCSO again responded, and the staff and students were moved to a safe location within the school.
The JCSO began an investigation into both called-in threats, and investigators at the JCSO were able to obtain digital evidence that one of the calls were placed by a high schooler at Jefferson Somerset.
Keleicia Walker (17 years old) agreed to conduct a post-Miranda interview with JCSO investigators, and during that interview, Walker admitted that she had placed the first call on November 13.
Walker described the call and the process she had used in order to place the call.
It was also discovered that a second student at Jefferson Somerset, Elexis Shuler, had been the caller behind the second bomb threat on November 15. Shuler agreed to come in for an interview at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and was driven there by a parent.
During Shuler’s post-Miranda interview, she confessed to calling in the second bomb threat at Jefferson Somerset.
On Friday, November 16, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released a press release that stated that both Walker and Shuler had been arrested on charges of issuing a false report concerning the planting of a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction as is stated in Florida Statute 790.163. Under Florida law, this is a felony charge in the second degree.
"Our investigators worked the evidence and interviews," said Jefferson County Sheriff Mac McNeill. "They did a really good job [and] it goes to show how good our investigators are."
While JCSO's team of investigators worked these case, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement provided assistance where needed in the apprehension of the bomb threat suspects.
