Christmas time is the time of year when attention turns to meeting needs, and there is a need for some of the youth in our community. On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Merry Ann Frisby spoke to the Monticello Kiwanis Jefferson Outreach for Youth (JOY). The JOY program helps provide Christmas gifts to approximately 150 needy children in Jefferson County. All the children who apply to the program are vetted “extremely well,” Frisby said, and there is a two-year limit on how often the children can apply. The JOY group has boxes in various locations in Monticello to collect the toys.
One item they need about every year and don’t always get enough of is balls. The kids have asked for basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs and football; the problem is getting enough of those. New, unwrapped toys and balls can be accepted, as well as cash donations. For children needing gifts, the deadline to apply is Monday, Dec. 7. Donations are accepted anytime. For information, to register or to donate, call Angela Gray, the JOY treasurer, at (850) 997-3356. Checks can be made out to JOY and mailed to her at 480 Walnut St., Monticello 32344. Merry Ann Frisby can be reached at (850) 997 4212.
