With the winning word “professional,” fourth grade Jefferson Somerset student Reign Carillo navigated four syllables, two schwa vowel sounds, double letters in the middle and a tricky ending to become this year's Jefferson County Spelling Bee champion! The bee was hosted by Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA) on Jan. 27 and included 22 competitors from across the county.
Second place went to sixth grade ACA student Mae McNeill, and third place went to fourth grade Jefferson Somerset student Gabrielle White.
Prior to the event, each school held grade-level and school-wide spelling competitions to determine who would advance to the county contest.
The top three classroom winners among Jefferson Somerset's fourth through eighth grade students were:
Fourth Grade: Zavier Johnson, Reign Carillo and Gabrielle White
Fifth Grade: Saul Zelaya, Devon Wing and Mikel Burse
Sixth Grade: Cain Kyler, Eeion Enzor and Gabriel Guzman
Seventh Grade: Greg Hagan, Caleb Mayo and Marta Cato
Eighth Grade: Del'Vontae Walker, Corey Hatchett Jr. and Lyric Young
Reign Carillo won the Jefferson Somerset school-wide bee, and all of Jefferson Somerset's classroom winners were invited to participate in the county bee. Zavier Johnson, Reign Carillo, Gabrielle White, Mikel Burse, Cain Kyler, Gabriel Guzman, Greg Hagan and Caleb Mayo attended.
The top three grade-level winners among ACA's fourth through eighth grade students were:
Fourth Grade: Melanie Metty, Walker Pavlik and Gracie Hicks
Fifth Grade: Connor Williams, Victor Campos-Galindo and Hudson Mills
Sixth Grade: Tuff Hardee, Mae McNeill and Abby Levengood
Seventh Grade: Blair Walker, Will Borders and Luke Kimmell
Eighth Grade: Lauren Davis, Amaryiah Hills and Caleb Walker
At ACA's school-wide bee, first place went to Mae McNeill, second place went to Will Borders and third place went to Caleb Walker, and all grade-level winners were invited to the county bee.
Congratulations to all these students for showing impressive spelling prowess and representing their schools well!
Jefferson County's spelling champion Reign Carillo will advance to the regional spelling bee. According to Jefferson County Spelling Bee Organizer John Womble, the regional bee will take place in an online testing platform in March (postponed from the original plan of Feb. 12 due to the pandemic). Winners at the regional level will advance to the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee, to be hosted by LeVar Burton in June 2022.
