On April 7, Monticello News personnel were alerted to some extensive damage to the Monticello Courthouse ceiling, where portions of the ceiling panels appear to be crumbling away. While no one was injured, the area below has been roped off to prevent any future injury in the case of more debris coming loose.
Jefferson County Clerk of Courts Kirk Reams says that the damage does not appear to be the result of water damage or a leak in the roof, which, he admits, is fortunate, as either of the two would be cause for serious concern and costly repairs. The Courthouse has already been inspected by an inspector and appraiser to locate the source of the damage, and to discuss options for repair, and no sign of water damage had been found. Professionals suspect that the increase in humidity and the regular and frequent vibrations of the industrial trucks that pass regularly around the courthouse circle may be to blame for the damage.
