Wacissa resident Betsy Maloy has been a member of the Wacissa United Methodist Church family for her entire life. She remembers attending the church as a young child with her parents long before the new church building for Wacissa United Methodist's congregation had been built.
Maloy received the Lord as her Savior during a Revival when she was just 12-years-old. Becoming a member of the church was the best thing she could ever do, she shares. “I've been hands-on involved in the church ever since,” she says.
Maloy has been involved in many, many committees with her church. She enjoys being around her church family and has always been more than willing and able to help wherever she is needed. She does seem to spend a lot of time on the kitchen committee, helping with the preparation and serving of meals for funerals, fundraisers and annual church events.
“We have a wonderful church here at Wacissa,” she shares. “I love this church. I love the people. I will continue to stay involved until I can't.”
She has also had several church mentors in her Christian life. Several school teachers and church ladies have helped to lead her in the right direction and teaching her about God and life. Many of her mentors are gone from this earth, but she still keeps hold of them in her heart and soul.
She can still remember when she joined the all-girls church choir that used to gather at her church.
“Miss Reid was the pianist,” she reminisces. She also remembers when the church ladies would pick her and other area children up for Sunday School and services and events. It was these ladies who kept her involved in church. She will forever be grateful to them for their friendship and guidance. Maloy is still a member of the church choir.
The first pastor she can remember is Rev. Robert May. There were several before him, but his name stands out, as he and his wife Marty were very much a part of this 15-year-old's life.
Maloy has several favorite church songs, but “How Great Thou Art” and “Beulah Land” stand out in her mind as worship songs that are especially meaningful to her.
One of the most important things a Christian should do, Maloy shares, would be to invite someone to church. “If they're already involved with a church, that's wonderful, but if not, I would say 'If you're looking, try Wacissa United Methodist Church.’”
“Another important thing would be to get involved,” she continues, “There's always something you can do. Ask for help, don't tell someone what to do, ask them to help you.”
She is the daughter of the late Fred and Mary Gill Maloy, who were lifelong residents of the Wacissa and Jefferson County Community.
