The Northside Church of Christ is a long-established entity in Monticello. It has done a lot over the years and one of its members is this week's member's spotlight.
Byrd-Jones has lived in Monticello since 1940. She was originally from Haines City, Fla. and is a long-standing member of the Northside Church of Christ, going back to the days when it was the Magnolia Street Church of Christ.
Jones is one of seventeen children born to John and Lizzie Byrd, and she has five children: Edmond Jones, Glover Jones, Lisa Jones Watkins, Cedric Jones, and Leslie Jones Longmire; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Jones earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences and a Master of Education degree from Florida A&M University and her Master of Science degree in Library Science from Atlanta University. During her professional career, Jones worked as Associate Director of Libraries at Florida A&M University.
Baptized in 1949, Jones grew up in the Church of Christ, has been involved in the benevolent work and various social activities of the church.
When the church starts to sing, her favorite song is Marching to Zion, and her favorite passages are James 1:17 - "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." James 4:10 "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
When not in church, Jones enjoys working on arts and crafts and enjoys reading Maya Angelou – because Jones says, "she's a great poet and the way she expresses life through words."
In 2009 Jones's daughter Leslie started the Margaret Byrd Jones Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in her mother's name (which will be featured in a future story).
