City gets needed easement for lift station replacement

Monticello officials recently decided that discretion was the better part of valor when it came to acquiring access to a tiny piece of land that the city needs in order to replace a failing wastewater lift station.
Given a choice by City Attorney Mitchell Herring between purchasing an easement, or going to court to seize the property, the council chose the former option on Tuesday, Jan. 2. This despite it striking many of the council members as ludicrous for the city to pay $25,000 for what not a few called a postage-stamp sized property of .06 acre.
