Coming up before the Monticello City Council at its next meeting in October may be a proposal to increase the rates for utility users outside the city limits.
City Manager Seth Lawless, at least, broached the possibility to the council at its meeting in September. He raised the idea of the rate increase in connection with a proposed truck stop near the interstate, for which business, were the county to approve it, the city would be providing water and sewer services.
Lawless noted that the city didn’t stand to benefit much from new developments outside its boundaries, other than for the water and sewer services, which he said were currently low.
