County handling hurricane debris removal

Unhappy with the way that the state handled hurricane debris removal and disposal following Hurricane Debby in August, local officials have decided to have county staff manage the debris removal post the more recent Hurricane Helene.
County Manager Shannon Metty told the Jefferson County Commission on Thursday evening, Oct. 3, that in accordance with the board’s expressed desire, her office would again be managing the debris removal and hauling, as it had done after last year’s Hurricane Idalia. She wanted the board to be aware, however, that doing so carried a slight risk.
