Faced with the prospect of unclaimed or indigent corpses, county officials recently established a policy setting procedures for the disposition of such remains.
As County Attorney Heather Encinosa explained it to the Jefferson County Commission on Thursday, May 16, contrary to Florida law, which requires counties to have provisions for the disposition of the remains of deceased unclaimed and/or indigent persons, Jefferson County lacked such a policy.
The purpose of the proposed measure, she said, was to provide uniform guidance pursuant to state law for the cremation of the remains of unclaimed deceased persons at public expense.
