County’s rock mine may get new life

Jefferson County’s long abandoned limerock mine near the Taylor County line is getting renewed attention, in no small part because of pressure from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
County Manager Shannon Metty told the Jefferson County Commission on Thursday morning, Feb. 1, that on a recent visit to the location, the FDEP had informed her that the county had either to start using the mine again or shut it down permanently.
“You need to start doing something,” Metty said the FDEP person told her.
