Two more county operations announced earlier this week that they were curtailing services because of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, outbreak.
The Jefferson County Solid Waste Department announced on Monday, March 23, that beginning Wednesday, March 25, recycling in the county's 11 collection centers would be temporarily suspended.
The department is asking residents to use the garbage receptacles within the collection center to dispose of their recyclables, along with their household waste.
“This will not affect commercial recycling,” said Solid Waste Department Director Beth Letchworth, adding that recycling will return to normal as soon as the conditions permit.
She explained that the step was being taken because her department relies on inmate squads from the Jefferson Correctional Institution to sort the recycling materials, and the Florida Department of Corrections is keeping the inmates confined during the COVID-19 epidemic to
ensure their safety.
“We will resume normal recycling as soon as we can,” Letchworth said.

On a similar note, the Jefferson County Extension Office closed its lobby to the public effective 10 a.m. Monday, March 23.
“Additionally, we are no longer able to make field visits at this time,” stated the press release from Danielle Sprague, agriculture and natural resources agent.
The statement went on to say that a station has been set up outside the lobby so that clients can pick up soil testing supplies or drop off specimens for identification. The operation promises to return to normal procedure as soon as the circumstances permit, according to the statement.
