For both the Jefferson Somerset Tigers and Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys, it all comes down to this. One more game to determine who will be at the top of the heap in Class 1A District Five. That question will be determined tonight, Feb. 14, on the hardwoods of the Lafayette High School gymnasium.
The Tigers average 36 rebounds per game, compared to 31.7 rebounds per game for the Cowboys. Earlier in December, the Tigers defeated the Cowboys, 61-54. A couple weeks later, the Cowboys evened the score by defeating the Tigers, 73-52. For both teams, those were the only district losses. Both teams will gain a place in the 16-team state championship tournament, with the District Champion having a higher seed.
The Cowboys come into the contest with an 18-5 record while the Tigers are sporting a 12-13 mark. The win-loss records for the teams may sound a bit misleading. Both teams are evenly matched and have plenty of team speed to spare. Both teams can play a stifling press defense and cause turnovers. Both teams will have to play at the top of their game in order to hoist the district championship trophy at the end. The Cowboys average 61 points per game, while the Tigers are scoring at a rate of 64.52 points per game.
The Tigers edged the Trojans of Hamilton County, 68-53, to punch their ticket to the district championship game.
The Cowboys defeated the Bulldogs of Taylor County High School, 71-36, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, to earn the chance to play for the district championship.
The Class 1A District Five championship game is set to take place tonight, Feb. 14, at the Lafayette High School gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
Admission is $6 per person.
