On Friday, Feb. 15, Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Burrus arrested Erik William Lucas, 46, of New Lisbon, WI, on charges of petit theft – felony.
According to the report issued by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO), Deputy Burrus responded to a gas station in Lamont in regards to a theft on the above date, at around 12 p.m.
Upon arrival, Deputy Burrus made contact with an employee and was informed that the subject had stolen a package of beef jerky.
The employee also provided a detailed description of the subject, information regarding the subject's direction of travel and a photo (taken using a video footage equipment) of the subject.
In the video footage, the subject could be seen walking from a nearby restaurant into the gas station, where he proceeded to the beef jerky display and picked up a package of the food item.
Then, the subject walked to a nearby food cooler, took a sandwich from the shelf and left the gas station.
After a search of the area where the employee said and video footage revealed that the subject had left towards, Deputy Burrus located the subject, who identified himself as Erik Lucas.
Deputy Burrus showed Lucas a photo of himself from the video footage, to which Lucas only replied “ah, shoplifting,” according to the JCSO report.
Lucas was Mirandized, at which time he informed Deputy Burrus that the items currently in his possession were stolen.
When questioned about the stolen beef jerky, Lucas advised that he had already eaten the beef jerky and “threw the bag somewhere.”
After conducting a search of the area where Lucas had been located, Deputy Burrus found the empty bag of beef jerky as well as the sandwich wrapper.
A pair of gloves (with price tag still attached) and three cans of alcohol were also located in the area. Lucas claimed that the items had also been stolen, but as of the JCSO report's narrative, it was still unknown from where Lucas had stolen those items.
