In the last month, Monticello’s Pack 803 has done a lot of exciting events. Last month Cubs, leaders and parents went on a hike through the Monticello Eco Park, off South Water Street. US Fish and Wildlife Service Biologist, Joe Reinman, from the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, helped the boys identify various trees, leaves, plants and insects on the hike. The identifications helped the boys earn various badges. The Pack also went camping on the Aucilla River, on property belonging to John Wilson. Twenty family members, scouts and leaders spent the night out, and worked on achievements related to camping, cooking and fishing. No fish were caught, but a lot of tree branches and hydrilla were snagged and released. To finish off the evening, “smores” were eaten, songs were sung and ghost stories were told in front of a roaring campfire. The Cubs were involved in some individual competitions that resulted in all of them earning flashlights and pocket knives, which were graciously provided by JT Surles, of Trophy Creek Outfitters.
On Nov. 1, 2020, the Pack visited Wolf Creek Pet Adoption Center, located on US 90 East. The Cubs learned about adopting pets and providing good homes for them. Wolf Creek stresses obtaining an animal from a shelter because they are filled with dogs and cats, the Pack learned that it’s best to microchip your animal, give them lots of love and attention, provide them with good nutrition/shelter and make sure they have a “forever home.” The boys and the shelter animals had a big time with each other. Many fingerprints were left on the Center’s pets when it came time to leave.
