Danielle Sprague, local Agricultural and Natural Resources Agent at the Jefferson County Farm Bureau Extension Office, has been awarded the Florida Farm Bureau Federation's 2020 Extension Professional of the Year Award. Out of all the nominees sent in by Florida's counties, the Farm Bureau chose Sprague to receive this award.
The recipient is selected by a panel of judges appointed by the State Office. The winners are then chosen based on their involvement in their County Farm Bureau and their impact on the agricultural community. The award recipient is given a plaque and a cash award. The nominating county also receives the same amount of money to go towards a new or existing project conducted with the local extension office.
Though Sprague has only been with the Jefferson County Extension office for a little less than three years, she has already made a significant impact in her workplace and the community. "She's done an outstanding job for us," Ernest Fulford, Jefferson County Farm Bureau president, said. "She's gone above and beyond. If she didn't know an answer to something, she'd find it." That's why Fulford submitted Sprague as a candidate for the award. He thought she deserved to be recognized for her efforts and what she's done, not only for the Farm Bureau but for the community.
Sprague was presented the award virtually at the Florida Farm Bureau Annual Meeting but did not receive the tangible award until last week, when Fulford, gave it to her in a cotton field while she helped them harvest a UF/IFAS cotton variety trial. Fulford had had the award, but he and Sprague's schedules kept conflicting. Since the award had been in his truck since he received it, he decided to go ahead and present it to her in the cotton field while they were on a break.
Sprague was honored to receive the title and said "It's the most awesome award I could get in my career. It shows that the people I serve recognize me."
