David Ginn, a local Aucilla Christian Academy graduate, is now tearing up the stage, becoming a small town local rocker in Valdosta. Many may remember Ginn growing up in Greenville with his parents, Ronnie and Nell Ginn.
David was not an athletic kid growing up, sports never really interested him, but music was a different story. He has fantastic memories of listening to his father's old 45s with his best buddies, Kenny Wilkerson and Joe Reams. They used to take old tennis rackets and pretend that they were guitars and have their rock concerts right there in the house.
As a teen, David worked in tobacco, hay and watermelon fields with his two friends, Wilkerson and Reams. They would work all summer to save up money for school clothes or other items they wanted. At the age of 15, David bought his first guitar for $200. He would spend day and night practicing and learning how to play.
Three years after graduation David moved to Valdosta, GA., meeting several musicians. He had much to learn from them, and he did, practicing just as hard as they did to perfect his skill and talent. This led him to play with local bands, but nothing ever really lasted.
In 1995, David got married to the love of his life, Elnita Griffin, and had a beautiful daughter, Brianna. This caused David to step back from his life as a musician and become the family man he needed to be. He has been a self-employed flooring subcontractor ever since.
In 1998 he started a Christian band, “JawBone,” and played excessively until 2008. After 2008 he started a 3-piece band where they played for charity and fundraisers. They were named Southern Rock Club. After the base player got married and moved, the band dissolved.
Currently, David is now the lead guitar and vocals for his new band, Southern Brothers. It is comprised of four outstanding musicians; Ethan Staten (vocal/drum), John Mays (vocals/acoustic guitar), Jeremy Wooldridge (bass guitar) and Donnie Smith (acoustic guitar/ rhythm guitar/sound engineer).
Practicing with each other has caused everyone to grow as a musician and create that strong bond of brotherhood. The way they see Southern Brothers is it's just five guys having fun, blowing off steam. They won't play at bars, mostly focusing on weddings and private events. With a wide range of talents and knowledge of music, they can put on a show rocking through the ages, playing anything from the '50s to present pop, rock and country.
Feel free to find them on Facebook (https://touch. facebook.com/southernbrothersbandvaldosta) and follow the band.
