Reflective of the trend across the state and the country, where mail-in and early voting are breaking records, voting in Jefferson County has been going briskly.
“Pretty heavy,” is the way that Supervisor of Elections Marty Bishop described the first day of early voting on Monday, Oct. 19.
Bishop noted that 404 persons had cast ballots in person on the opening day of the early voting, compared with 808 during the entire early voting period for the primary.
“That’s half in just one day,” Bishop said, adding that voting was continuing relatively steady.
As of the close of business on Monday, Oct. 26, the elections office’s website showed a total of 4,274 people had cast ballots out of a possible 10,229 registered voters in the county. That represented a 41.78-percent turnout, with eight more days yet to go until Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
A quick breakdown of the ballots cast showed that 2,099 were mailed in, 2,174 were in-person early votes, and one was a provisional ballot.
By political parties, the voting broke down into 2,245 Democrats, 1,635 Republicans, 377 individuals identifying as having No Party Affiliation and 17 designated as other.
Early voting continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, from 8.30 a.m. to 4:30 each day. Early voting may only be done at the elections office at 1175 W. Washington St.
Mail-in ballots, meanwhile, will continue to be accepted throughout Tuesday, Nov. 3. And voting for the general election will go from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the various precincts.
