Amidst the giggles and delighted exultations of children and grown ups alike, the Jefferson County Recreation Park, located at 1380 Mamie Scott Dr., in Monticello, came alive with celebration during an Easter Egg Hunt event, which took place Saturday, April 9 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event was co-coordinated by Restored Glory Christian Center and First United Methodist Church of Monticello, and was met with enthusiastic participation from the community.
Restored Glory offered a tantalizingly fragrant treat of funnel cakes and corn dogs to the community, while First United grilled up some tasty hot dogs to pair with a wide assortment of cold drinks for participants to choose from.
Aside from good food and even better company, a variety of fun and messy games were set up in the grassy field, enticing kids and adults to roll up their sleeve and make a good, old fashioned mess! Among these games were an egg-toss, where players would begin gently tossing a raw egg to nearby partner. The partner would then take a step away from their team-mate, and toss the egg back. This would continue until someone either missed catching the egg, or didn't catch it carefully enough: splat!
Another game offered to excitable mess-makers was “sloppy twister,” which consisted of participants enjoying a nice, fair game of Twister, with a twist! On each of the ordinary Twister color spots lay a creamy pile of colorful shaving cream! Players giggled as they put their balance to the ultimate test, slipping and sliding as they struggled to be the last player standing!
In spite of the nippy breeze, there was a line to play the water balloon game, in which players took turns trying to toss a full water balloon into a hoop made by their opponents' own two arms. If their opponent failed to catch the balloon smoothly within their hoop, they risked it bursting and showering them with a small amount of chilly water! Shrieks of surprised delight followed every bursted balloon, and it soon became quite apparent that some Monticello citizens have very good aim.
Bins full of brightly colored paint marked a hand-painting station, where participants were encouraged to choose their colors, have their hands (or feet) painted, and create cheerful murals on rolls of paper that were then set out in the sun to dry.
At 12:30 p.m. sharp, a whistle sounded, signaling the begin of the much anticipated egg hunt! 1,000 brightly colored eggs were hidden around the park, and kids of all ages scrambled to collect their share of them. As they searched high and low for more eggs, little shouts rang in the air: “I've found one!” and, “Here's more!” to much enjoyment of the parents and guardians, who looked on from the sidelines.
At the end of all the fun, an Easter Basket Raffle was pulled, and three winners were presented with a prized Easter basket full of goodies. Winners, Ava Corley (16), Carlissa Shuler (15) and Jack Vollettson (6) each took home a prize basket from the raffle. Congratulations!
