Education Week celebrates public schooling

American Education Week happens the week before Thanksgiving week, to provide a focused celebration of our public school community. The idea of a national Education Week was first proposed in 1919, when representatives of the American Legion and the National Education Association were meeting. When Education Week was first observed in 1921, the aim was to address illiteracy in the country.
