Our loving father, Edward “Eddie” Assad, born Aug. 19, 1923, left our lives on Oct. 14, 2022, at 99 years young. Eddie was born in Brownsville, Pa. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he met his beautiful and loving wife, Iris. He served in the United States Air Force and was a WWII and Korean War Radio Operator for B-17s and B-29s. Eddie and Iris moved to Miami Springs, Fla., where they started a family. He was a building contractor and also owned a gas station. He moved his family to Monticello in 1965 where he farmed his land. Eddie, better known as “Pops,” later worked with his daughter and son-in-law for 16 years at the “Hilltop Country Store.” He loved telling stories, especially about being a young boy shining shoes for a nickel in the subways of New York during the Depression.
Eddie was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Iris Stella Assad, and his sister, Violet Wolf. Surviving relatives include his children; sons, Edward Gary Assad (Risa) and Richard Joseph Assad; daughters, Donna Jean Lamont (William) and “the light of his life,” daughter Susan Lynn Assad--Our Precious Sue; grandchildren, Joshua Assad (Suzanne), Wyatt Lamont (who continuously cared for his grandfather and the household); great-grandsons, Cruz and Kane Assad; sister, Gloria Wilburth; nephew John Wilburth; niece, Laura Boss; and their families; Eddie’s friend and companion, Barbara Porzio, whom he mentioned every day.
We would like to honor his caregivers with special thanks: Katie Elkins, who was there for Donna when she most needed it, and Casey Gruber, who held Eddie’s hand to the end. She went above and beyond for him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
