In recognition of Black History Month, the elementary students at Jefferson Somerset presented the performance “Lift Every Voice And Sing” while emulating several well-known African-American historical figures.
The program was held on Tuesday evening, Feb. 18 in the Tiger's Den at the school.
Students and their choice of well-known people of color included: Destiny Seaton as Mistress of Ceremony; Amelia Cordle as Ruby Bridges; Javarian Ulee as Thurgood Marshal; Reign Carillo as Maya Angelou; Anjerrica Hale as Condoleezza Rice; Ty'lis Keaton as Louis Armstrong; Devonte Bailey as Colin Powell; Jose Santillian as Garrett Morgan; Jerimiah Parrish as Stevie Wonder; Angel Guzman as Eleanor Roosevelt; Knecole Hill as Coretta Scott King; Leonardo Rivera as George Washington Carver; Nevaeh Pulzone as Alicia Keys; Carlasia Pittman as Rosa Parks; Que'Jes Grayer as Michael Jordan; Keion Enzor as Muhammad Ali; Breshawn Bellamy as Shaquille O'Neal; Aleeshia James as Harriett Tubman; Azaria Morris as Serena Williams; Jenise Harris as Vanessa Williams; William Massey as Malcolm X; Zyreona Seabrooks as Janet Jackson; Eric Harris as Martin Luther King Jr.; Kimora Bright as Oprah Winfrey; Greg Hagan as Barack Obama; Dezaray Kennedy as Whitney Houston; Naila Hill as Bessie Blount Griffin; Jeziah Crumitie as Jennifer Houston; Cameron McCray as Nelson Mandela; JaMyrakle Shaw as Michele Obama, Zymeriah Seabrooks as Beyonce; Destiny Seaton as Madam CJ Walker; and Desmond Whitfield as Ray Charles.
The title of the program, “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” is a song written by James Weldon Johnson. The song was sung in unison by the students, ending the program.
