Elizabeth Baptist Church was founded in 1831 and has a long history of sharing the Christian faith in Jefferson County to this day. Pastor Glenn Canup and the congregation invite all who grew up worshipping at the church to participate in their 191st Homecoming Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 25. You are also invited! The church is located at 4124 Bassett Dairy Rd., in Monticello. The theme of the celebration is “Sharing the Good News Since 1831.”
The guest speaker during the 11 a.m. Worship Service will be David Burton, who has years of training and experience in Evangelism and Church Health. His ministry seeks to enhance and encourage local churches in their practice of Intentional New Testament Evangelism.
The celebration's theme song, “Do You Really Care” by Bill Cates, comes from the Christian folk musical Good News. For the musical aspects of the Homecoming Worship Service, the Elizabeth Baptist Church Praise Team and Choir will be joined by Christopher Warren of Thomasville First Baptist Church.
Following the Worship Service, a covered dish luncheon will be held in the Fellowship Hall. The church is providing turkey with dressing, fried chicken, breads, coffee and tea. Suggested covered dish items to bring include salads, vegetables or desserts in quantities that could feed one's own family plus two guests. Those planning to attend are encouraged to invite their friends and family.
Elizabeth Baptist Church's 1831 beginning occurred just a few years after Jefferson County itself was created in 1827. The founding members – James and Elizabeth Padgett Walker, Jesse Walker, Charles and Sarah Walker and Joseph and Caroline Kinsey – met in a simple log cabin that likely was located next to what is now known as the Walker-Lightsey Cemetery, off of North Salt Road, according to research by Cindy Roe Littlejohn. About one year ago, a monument was placed there to commemorate the starting place of the church.
In 1900, a one-room church building was constructed at the current location of Elizabeth Baptist Church, and this structure is still part of the facility that has expanded with various additions over the years. Congregation member Linda Demott notes that one highpoint of the church history “was the mission, started in a barn, to the government farm families during WWII, 1942-44. Twenty-eight people were added as members in 1944 as a result of this outreach, and many of those members are serving in the church today.”
