Twelve Years Later …
July 1, 2007, I found myself as the new owner of the Monticello News. It was something that I had wanted for a long time. For years I had told Mr. (Ron) Cichon that when he was ready to retire out of the newspaper business, to please give me first dibs at buying his newspaper. And he did.
I was born and raised in Madison County but attended high school at Aucilla Christian Academy and spent all my weekends “hanging out with my friends” in Monticello. Jefferson County has always been like a second home to me and Nikki Salas Little and Betty Wilford Spence were always like a second mother to me! I spent many a night under their roof!
The welcome I received when I “moved in” 12 years ago was tremendous; flowers, cards, visits and well wishes came flooding in. Becoming a part of the family with the Monticello News staff was exceptionally easy as well; they welcomed me with open arms.
It’s been a fun 12 years, to say the least. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Jefferson County all these years. The old friendships I have rekindled and the new friendships I have made have been life-changing.
As a child, I never had to wonder what I wanted to do when I “grew up.” I grew up doing what I knew I wanted to do for the rest of my life – the newspaper business. Always remember, when you wake up each morning and dread the job that lies ahead of you, then it’s time to change jobs. When you wake up each morning and find joy in what lies ahead of you, then you know you have the right job for you. I wake up happy each and every day!
Thank you, Jefferson County, for letting me be a part of your family!
