The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that on Tuesday, May 6, Troopers stopped a vehicle on U.S. 19 South near I-10 in Lamont, Fla., which had been reported as stolen the day before by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office. In the process of arresting the driver, 43-year-old Michael Hargis from Kentucky, an explosive mortar round was discovered in the trunk.
The State Fire Marshall as well as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were called, and the scene was secured. They took possession of the mortar round and advised they would transport it to a safe location at the Pat Thomas range in Havana, Fla., where it could be safely detonated
