February is designated as American Heart Month to bring attention and awareness to the issue of heart disease in the United States. Heart disease is the Number 1 killer of Americans. Nearly a quarter of deaths in the United States are caused by heart disease each year. Heart disease kills more people than all forms of cancer combined. Heart Disease was the leading cause of death for Jefferson County in 2018, with 35 deaths. This was slightly over the number of deaths from cancer.
While these numbers are high, the good news is that heart disease is often preventable if the person is willing to make changes. A recent survey in the U.S. shows that 83 percent believe that heart attacks can be prevented but are not motivated to do anything. Also, 72 percent of Americans do not consider themselves at risk for heart disease, and 58 percent put no effort into improving their heart health.
Practicing simple steps and making healthy choices has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Here are some suggestions to lower your risk.
If you use tobacco products, including vaping, get help to quit. In Florida, you can contact the Tobacco Quit Line at 1-877-U-CAN-NOW or by email at tobaccofreeflorida.com. You can also contact the Jefferson County Health Department Tobacco Program Specialist at (850) 342-0170.
Keep a healthy weight. Extra body weight can put more stress on the heart and blood vessels which can lead to a heart attack.
Exercise about two and a half hours per week. It can be as simple as taking a brisk walk or riding a bicycle.
Avoid large amounts of salt. Consider using other spices to bring flavor to food without salt.
Manage any medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This means getting regular medical care and taking medications that are prescribed for you. You can call the Jefferson County Health Department Chronic Disease Specialist at (850) 342-0170 if you need help managing your disease.
We are offering a free health fair and screening event on Friday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the CVS parking lot. We can help you know your numbers and provide education on lowering your risk for heart disease. Show some love to yourself by taking care of you. We hope to see you there.
