During the morning of Tuesday, March 10, several different Jefferson County fire departments were called to the scene of an active house fire on Mays Road. The firefighters were informed that the fire had begun in the kitchen, and when the first fire engine arrived at the scene, the house was already showing signs of the fire and smoke. All occupants had already fled the house, so firefighters instantly began to attack the flames. Two lines of hose were deployed and several firefighters attempting to enter the house and combat the fire from inside the residence, but as soon as the front door to the home was opened, the room burst into flames and firefighters were not able to make a safe entry into the home. Water was sprayed from the outside of the home, and once the flames had been beaten back slightly, a crew of firefighters attempted a second entry into the residence, this time with success. After a little over two hours of firefighting, the fire was extinguished and an investigation into the cause of the house fire could be conducted.
According to the report issued by the Jefferson County Fire Rescue (JCFR), the fire began in the kitchen and the investigator believes that it was caused by unattended cooking.
Thanks to the residents' quick action in fleeing the burning home, no injuries were sustained, but the JCFR reports that the home has been deemed a complete loss.
The home was owned by Errin Wade, but lived in by her son, Ronzo Wade.
Wade lived in the home with his girlfriend, Savannah Akers, and their young children.
