If you missed the Waukeenah Methodist Church Fish Fry on Sept. 17, don't worry. You can mark your calendar for a repeat of the event on Friday, Oct. 8, 5 to 8 p.m.
"We appreciate the community's support," says event coordinator Melva Walker, "and we're going to do it again."
A $12 plate includes fresh-caught fried mullet, cheese grits, homemade coleslaw, baked beans, pickles, hush puppies, a drink and choice from a mouthwatering array of desserts. The dinners are take-out or dine-in. Take-out meals will be served outside in a tent, and dine-in seating will be available in the Fellowship Hall.
Proceeds from the fundraiser, an annual affair for at least 50 years, go to support local missions, such as hurricane relief.
"I can remember at the age of 18 going fishing with my dad and men of the community," says Walker. "We would net fish for mullet, back when you were allowed to do that. Then we would clean the fish. Now we buy the fish."
According to Stephen Monroe, who took a three-hour turn at the fryer on Sept. 17, they cooked up around 500 lbs of fish.
"It's a good time. It's fellowship," Monroe says. "People come from all over, from Tallahassee, Valdosta and Thomasville. People come from Georgia just for our grits! We cook the grits all day long, and they get better and better. Then we add the cheese. We know how to fix it right."
You can enjoy all the fixin's and support local missions on Friday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 81 Methodist Church Rd.
