Five seniors at Jefferson Somerset were recently honored with the reception of a memorial scholarship that will help fund their college education.
The staff and administration at Jefferson Somerset are excited to announce that five of the school's seniors from the Class of 2020 were recently honored as the recipients of a new academic scholarship that has been offered in memory of the late Betty S. Monroe, a fifth-generation Jefferson County resident and a native to the Wacissa area. She graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1953, and four of her five children received college degrees after graduating from Jefferson County High School.
Known to her community as “Mama Betty,” she dedicated her life to serving others.
In 2008, Mrs. Monroe lost her battle against cancer, but her legacy for helping others continues to live on in the form of the Betty S. Monroe Memorial Scholarship, which was established to financially assist students as they pursue their higher education hopes and dreams.
The five students who received this year's scholarship were: Ny’Qeria Alexander, Ayianna Bradley, Cindy Le, Jada Mosley and Allen Washington.
Each student received a $1,000 check that should be used in obtaining their college or university educational pursuits.
