Intramural flag football is making a comeback at Jefferson Somerset. For the past two Saturdays, players in first through sixth grades have engaged in action-packed games at Jefferson Field while families, friends and the cheer squads filled the morning air with enthusiastic encouragement. Additional games are scheduled for the next five Saturdays, with 9:15 a.m. scrimmages for first- through third-grade students and 10:30 a.m. matchups for fourth- through sixth-grade students.
Coach Devan Roberts reports that 78 Jefferson Somerset students are involved in the aftercare intramural flag football and cheer program, and inquiries about it increase daily.
“This year will mark the reemergence of intramural sports in Jefferson County,” says Roberts. “In recent years, the majority of the youth in Monticello, Lloyd, Wacissa, Waukeenah and surrounding areas have been going to Leon County to enjoy athletics. Not anymore! We've created this outlet to enjoy recreational sports in our own backyard.”
Leading the pack so far for the first- through third-grade teams were Baby Tigers Quantez Parker, Maurice Arnold Jr., Ah'Mari Coasey, Jamar Walker and Kamon Gentle. Making big plays among the fourth- through sixth-grade teams were Keyon Enzor, Teree Dunlap, Breshawn Bellamy and Cain Kyler.
“Our mission is to use sports to create life-long lessons that can positively correlate to the holistic success of one's everyday wellbeing,” says Roberts. “We start by shining bright in academics and displaying good behavior in all settings.”
Upcoming games are every Saturday at 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. at Jefferson Field, 600 S. Water St. Go, Tigers!
